This round painted wedding bowl exhibits a depiction of the Holy trinity at the centre. God the Father is shown balanced on a globe, holding up his crucified son in front of him. The Holy Spirit is perched on the horizontal cross-member in the form of a dove. The figurative group is represented against a yellow ochre background and framed by a frill of clouds and a red band. The broad outer rim of the bowl is decorated in gold with floral motives, two cherubs’ heads are positioned opposite each other at the top, while two coats of arms are represented either side of the Holy Trinity. On the left the Timmermann family coat of arms: a yellow ground charged with a black bear wearing a ring around its neck; and on the right that of the Krusselmann family: a blue fess ordinary against a red and white checked ground charged with two female busts with wreaths.

beschreibung

Research History / Discussion

According to Emmendörffer the composition of the Holy Trinity is very similar to that found on paintings of the same subject firmly attributed to Cranach and his workshop. However the motif of the Holy Ghost as a dove perched on the horizontal cross-member suggests that Kemmer drew on a woodcut first published in 1512 in Adam of Fulda’s prayerbook.
