An elderly man in elegant attire places his left arm around a young woman's neck and moves towards her chin with his right hand. The equally well-dressed woman caresses his chin with one hand, while she reaches into his purse with the other. A painting showing half-length figures against a black background, that belongs to the pictorial type of the Ill-matched Pair.

Research History / Discussion

The male figure appears as if it were coloured in. Probably a 16th century copy. The prototype may be the painting now in the National Museum, Warsaw (PL_MNW_MOb40_FR289). Excepting the difference in the position of the man's right hand and his more closed mouth the painting in Schwerin is identical, although the female figure is more schematic.

A large series of such secular paintings was produced in the Cranach workshop, the earliest dated version is from the year 1522.
