Research History / Discussion

‘In comparison with the pendant (Elector Joachim II. of Brandenburg) the difference in rank of the sitters is clear. Johann – like the portraits of married couples- assumes a position on the right side, which was generally reserved for subjects of lower rank. His armor is similar to that of the future elector, but less lavish; he also wears less jewellery. In addition the painting is not as ambitious in its execution as that of the higher ranking companion piece.’
