The painting depicts Elector Joachim I of Brandenburg as a half-length figure against a dark background. He is turned slightly to the right and looks in the same direction. His robe is made of dark red damask with a white pomegranate pattern and lined with fur. Under this he wears an orange-red doublet richly embroidered with pearls to create a pattern of acanthus leaves and a zigzag motif. He wears numerous rings on his finger and holds rosary beads in his hands.

Research History / Discussion

‘In a variant of this painting, which is now in Aschaffenburg castle (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen), the elector is depicted as ruler, wearing a large feathered beret and a signet ring. Technical examinations have shown that the faces of both portraits are almost identical and therefore were probably executed at the same time. However the condition of the painting in Aschaffenburg makes it difficult to determine which of the two paintings served as a template. The portrait of Joachim in Berlin could be the left wing of a diptych or triptych with a sacred representation in the centre and a right wing possibly depicting Cardinal Albrecht or Joachim II; but probably not his wife Elizabeth of Denmark.’

Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- the initial design may have been executed with a dry drawing material (dark chalk); this was then reinforced using a fluid, black medium and brush

Type/Ductus:

- freehand underdrawing (hands); possibly traced or copied in the face

- thin lines

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; lines delineate the main contours and describe essential details and facial features (?)

Deviations:

- minor corrections were made during the painting process

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- not possible

Comments:

- possibly after a pre-existing design
