Provenance

  • property of the Fürstenberg collection, according to Feurstein, in Cat. Donaueschingen 1934 probably arrived from Count Wilhelm of Fürstenberg, 1499-1549, Ortenberg near Offenburg and Strasbourg (Kinzigtaler branch), to the main branch. Count Wilhelm was the only one to convert to reformation ideas.

Support

According to the beech wood chronology for Lucas Cranach and his workshop the youngest annual ring dates from 1518. Assuming only the bark was removed then the tree was felled in the year 1518. Taking the average seasoning period of 2 to 7 years into account the panel could not have been painted before 1520.
