Research History / Discussion

The child and the the coats of arms evidently are not part of the original design. [Gurlitt 1912, 69-70]

Between about 1932 and 2011 the epitaph was displayed together with the panels showing Law and Grace as a triptych. […] Even without this context the small epitaph in the style of Cranach retains its charm. It bears witness to the love bestowed on a deceased child and the grieving parents' hope that the soul would be admitted to God.

- binding for the final painted version; bold lines delineate the main contours, and describe some details and the facial features; no representation of volume with hatching-strokes; possibly occasional washes?

Deviations:

- a few corrections were made to forms during the painting
