CDA ID/Inventory No: DE_smbGG_1736

Object No: FR 059

Cross-section No.: EP 123

Brief description of paint: brown fur (probably with some retouching on top)

Sample location: lower edge, to the right of the centre

Sample No.: 193

Observations:

4. brownish-grey layer, appears more red than 2. under UV-light, clearly retouching

3. thin reddish-brown transparent layer, without pigments; fluoresces an intense yellow in UV-light, varnish/ glaze?

2. brown layer, numerous pigments (white, black and warm red (also warm red under UV-light, appears to be a red lake/iron oxide?), brown glaze modulating the fur

1. thin white layer, imprimitura

0. white layer, ground

Comments: an original brown layer (fur) applied over white imprimatura and white ground layers; above the brown layer is a glaze or varnish layer, followed by retouching , compare with EP 122

Cross-section No.: EP 124

Brief description of paint: black brocade fabric, lighter pattern

Sample location: lower edge, at the left

Sample No.: 194

Methods: EDX

Observations:

5. layer with pigments, retouching

4. transparent layer, varnish

3. transparent layer, varnish

2. black layer, black flakey and large white pigment particles as well as some very finely ground red pigments [EDX: Pb, Ca carbon black of vegtetable origin, lead white, calcium salt]

1. very thin, just partially visible isolation/ imprmitura layer

0. white ground with bubbles, without cocoliths

Comments: the imprimitura is so thin, you might rather speak of an isolation layer. The black is mixed with white (lead white and calcium salt). Probably an old or even original varnish (?)

Cross-section No.: EP 122

Brief description of paint: brown fur (probably retouching on top)

Sample location: lower edge, left of the centre

Sample No.: 192

Observations:

5. brownish-grey layer under UV like 2, retouching

4. thin strip exhibiting less fluorescence than 3

3. thin reddish brown transparent layer, without pigments but with an intense, homogeneous yellow fluorescence, varnish/glaze?

2. brown layer with many different pigments (white, black and warm red (in UV-light also warm red, could be a red lake/iron oxide?), brown modulation of the fur

1. thin white layer, imprimitura

0. white layer, ground

Comments: an application of brown paint over the white ground and white imprimatura

Brief description of paint: black coating, verso

Sample location: verso

Sample No.: 191

Methods: EDX

Observation:

3. thin overpaint/ retouching?

2. transparent layer -varnish or binding medium- possibly original?, as it exhibits inclusions similar to those in the black layer

1. black layer with very fine pigment particles (possibly lamp black, does not fluoresce) and a few glassy inclusions (probably binding medium, fluorensces under UV-light) [EDX: Si, Ca, S, (Fe) calcium salt in the black]
