A half-length portrait of a man in black clothing with a beret. He is depicted facing right against a black background. His physiognomy concords with that of the portrait of a donor on a wing of the altarpiece in Naumburg an der Saar by the Cranach workshop. A coat-of-arms enabled the identification of the sitter as Philipp of the Rhein, Count Palatine, Bishop of Freising and Naumburg.

Research History / Discussion

'The portrait is probably related in some manner to the takeover of the diocese in 1520, therefore and in accordance with stylistic features this painting is dated about 1520-22.

[Gemäldegalerie Berlin, Unsinn 2010]

'The identification of the sitter as Philipp Pfalzgraf bei Rhein, Bishop of Freising and Naumburg is in addition confirmed by one of Hagenauers portrait medallions and wooden relief, which is dependent on the latter.'

[Habich 1907, 181ff.]
