Neglected for a considerable time this panel was doubtlessly inspired by Erasmus' essay 'In Praise of Folly' published in 1511. The book describes an ill-matched pair whereby the two protagonists display opposing characteristics: youth is juxtaposed with old age, beauty with ugliness, greed with desire, the commonplace with the well-situated [...]. This systematic repertoire highlights the old man's lechery as well as the interest of the young woman, underlining the ridiculousness of the situation and happily disparaging the human degeneration.
