Research History / Discussion

Preliminary study for a portrait painted in 1541, formerly in the collection of the Grand Duke of Weimar (1934 with Th. Fischer, Lucerne), and published by [Helmut] Bethe in the mid 1930s. He considered the version in Szczecin to be a copy [PL_MNS_Szt-1382].

[Rosenberg 1960, 31, no. 85] (Translated from German, cda 2025)

As early as 1942 Zimmermann [E. H. Zimmermann 1942 A, 4] attributed the study to Cranach the Younger.

[Rosenberg 1960, no. 85]

There is a further portrait following this study by the Master I.S. [DE_KSVC_M023]
