Research History / Discussion

In 1932 [Friedländer, Rosenberg 1932, no 341e] (reaffirmed in [Friedländer, Rosenberg 1979, no 424E]) saw similarities with the sitter in a painted portrait of a young boy [DE_KSW_GGe00659], now tentively identified as Johann Friedrich II, Duke of Saxony (first by [Zimmermann, E. H. 1942 B, 38]). According to Rosenberg [Rosenberg 1960, no. 79] Zimmermann rejected the hypothosis associating this study with the painting in Weimar [Zimmermann, E. H. 1942, 38].

M.-H. Montout-Richard states that despite the resemblance with the painted portrait of Prince Severin of Saxony [DE_HHK_NONE-002] his age excludes him from being identified as the sitter. She suggests that the sketch could be a portrait of Johann Friedrich III (1538-1565) and sees similarities with a miniature in the House of Saxony's Family Album (Stammbuch) [SLUB online]
