Research History / Discussion

Girshausen accepts the identification of the sitter as Sibylle von Cleve, first suggested by Charles Loriquet the Reims catalogue (1881). Rosenberg on the other hand agrees with Zimmermann, seeing a closer similarity with Princess Catharine of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen. However, unlike Zimmermann both Girshausen and Rosenberg follow the early attribution in the catalogue from 1881 and consider this to be the work of Cranach the Elder. Koepplin and Hofbauer also agree with the latter identification of the sitter. However, Hofbauer attributed the portrait to Cranach the Younger, whereas Koepplin remains noncommittal.
