Research History / Discussion

M.-H. Montout-Richard agrees with Girshausen [Girshausen 1936, no. 90] and disregards the early hypothesis that the study is a portrait of Christian II, King of Denmark. A part from the date she also considers the resemblance unconvincing. She rejects a more recent proposal that the sitter might be Johann-Ernst of Saxe-Coburg, stating it is an identification made solely based on his hat. However, she does confirm that the sitter is undoubtedly a member or ally of the House of Saxony.
