Research History / Discussion

According to Girshausen ‘The portrait study in Reims was probably used for a portrait painting of the duke in the portrait gallery at Hardenberg Castle. The painting is now lost, but a medallion created by Valentin Maler in 1575 is based on this portrait.’

As early as 1934 Rosenberg [Rosenberg 1934, 185] pointed out that the portrait is almost a mirror image of a representation of the duke in the painting of 'A Stag Hunt' (now in the Prado) [ES_MNdP_P02176].
