A small devotive panel depicting the crucifixion. The composition is arranged with clarity and the space cleverly distributed to lend the scene a sense of calm: Christ breathes his last breath and it will soon be dark. The soldier at the foot of the cross is dressed in armour typical of 16th century Saxony. Mary Magdalene kneels embracing the cross. The painter has positioned the Virgin to the left in the company of two women and St John is positioned slightly behind.

Research History / Discussion

[...] a barbe along the edge of the panel suggests that it may have been conceived as a panel for private devotion that was integrated into a piece of furniture [comment cda: it is more probable that the panel was conceived with its frame and may have been the central panel of a small freestanding triptych]

Condition Reports

Date2009
