The portrait depicts a young man as a half-length figure facing left against a light blue background. His blond hair is visible beneath the black hat on his head. He wears a reddish-brown cloak with a light coloured fur lining and a dark brown undergarment with volumious sleeves. He holds the lapel with his left hand and in doing so shows the sinet ring on his index finger.

Research History / Discussion

In the Exhib. Cat. Basel 1974, No. 624 Falk establishes a stylistic and physiognomic similarity with the worshiper in the painting 'Christ triumphing over Death and the Devil', 78.5 x 58.5 cm, private collection. This painting is 'with reasonable certainty' ('mit ziemlicher Sicherheit') attributed to Cranach the Younger and Falk therefore identifies this artist as the author of the Strasbourg portrait. An early work as he was only eighteen in 1533.
