Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Materials:

- fluid, black medium and brush; the initial design may have been roughly fixed employing a dry medium?

Type/Ductus:

- freehand underdrawing

- thin to broader lines

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; lines delineate contours and describe the essential details and the facial features; no representation of volume

Deviations:

- minor alterations made during the painting process to clearly define form

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- not possible; could be workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder

Support

- panel with vertically aligned grain, thinned and cradled

- original with a rounded top; the upper left zone now has a wooden addition

- the left and right edges have presumably been trimmed by a few millimeters

- tow was probably partially applied in a horizontal direction to the lower half of the panel

Ground and Imprimatura

- a barbe from the ground is visible c. 1 cm from the upper and lower panel edges, and at the right side a few millimeters from the edge

Paint Layers and Gilding

- blue background

[Heydenreich, cda 2014]

  • examined by Gunnar Heydenreich
