Christ and the Virgin are shown in a full-length figurative compostion as the Man and Mother of Sorrows respectively. They stand on stony ground against a dark background. At the top of the painting numerous Putti are depicted in clouds. Christ is shown turned slightly to the right, in addition to the white loincloth he wears a crown of thorns on his head. His arms are folded in front of his chest and he displays his stigmata. The Virgin is turned slightly to the left. She wears a white shawl over her dark robe and a white headscarf, the ends of which she uses to dry her tears.
