The Virgin is depicted as a half-length figure, sitting frontally and supporting the naked infant Christ on her lap with both hands. The infant holds a piece of bread in his left hand. There is a room in the background that opens out into a landscape through an arched door.

Support

- hardwood panel consisting of 3 boards vertically aligned, dimensions (recto): 17.4 (l.), 12.6; 12.0; 25.7 (r.)

- numerous knots are visible on the reverse, irregularities in the wood can be discerned in the painted surface (e.g. Jesus's knee)

- recto, there is a wooden insert, 2 cm in width, 2.5 cm from the left edge

Ground and Imprimatura

- the white ground extends to the edge of the panel on the painted side; at the top it ends 0.4 cm before the edge and at the bottom it ends 0.7 cm before the edge

Paint Layers and Gilding

- the painted surface extends to the edge of the panel at the sides

- impasto paint application of the Virgin's blue mantle

  • yellowed varnish, partial losses, particularly in the area of the Virgin's shoulder
