The painting shows Herod seated at the end of a table with a white tablecloth. His wife and other members of the court are also represented around the table. A servant carrying a tray of fruit enters from the right, while at the centre, in front of the table, Herod’s daughter Salome presents him and the viewer with a more gruesome tray, bearing St John the Baptist’s decapitated head.
