The panel depicts a man (possibly a merchant called Carsten Timmermann from Lübeck) in three-quarter profile, facing to his left against a monochrome green backdrop. He is dressed like a contemporary merchant, wearing a rather sumptuous fur-lined gown over a simple black jacket with a finely decorated white shirt peeping out at the neckline. His hair is cut in a bob and his face is cleanly shaven. A stone ledge separates him spatially from the viewer, while acting as a surface upon which he rests the book he is leafing through.
