In this composition Christ is shown as a three-quarter length figure in an almost frontal pose with his hands bound and his head crowned with thorns. He displays his wounds to the viewer, while Pilate stands to his right, wearing a turban and pointing at him, his gesture reminding us of the subject ‘Ecce Homo’. Behind a soldier’s grimacing face looms out of the otherwise dark background.
