This portrait shows the Emperor Charles V as half-length figure against an olive-green background turned slightly to the left and looking upwards. He is wearing a gold-trimmed black cloak over a richly gold-woven undergarment, a black velvet cap with a badge. The depiction of the face is not idealised and reproduces Charles' distinctive features with his prominent jaw and bulging lower lip. The only element that refers to his royal status is the emblem of the Golden Fleece hanging from the chain that he wears.

Research History / Discussion

Koepplin associates this painting with a version shown in Dresden in 1899 [Exhib. Cat. Dresden 1899, no. 124], also cited by Friedländer [Friedländer, Rosenberg 1979, no. 345C]. However the dimensions are slightly different (41 x 33 cm as opposed to 45,5 x 35 cm) which may or may not be the result of human error, nor do there appear to be any remnants of a inscription (possibly hiden by the frame) as is mentioned in the Dresden catalogue.

[D. Koepplin, handwritten on the photocopy of a page from the Princeton catalogue; Koepplin Archive]

Various versions of this portrait type of the Emperor Charles V exist. The original version is probably [ES_MTB_112-1933-7]. Another cropped and probably later version is [PL_MNP_Mo473].
