This painting is a simplified copy of a work by Cranach the Elder and represents an episode from the Bible: as Christ utters His final words ('Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit'), a Roman centurion experiences a religious conversion. Here Christ is silhouetted against a dark and troubled sky at the point of death. In contrast the centurion who enters from the left astride a white horse exudes energy. Clothed in contemporary attire he looks up at Christ and recognises that 'Truly this man was the Son of God'. The composition is framed by the good and the bad thief.
