The viewer is transported close to the event that happened in a stable in Bethlehem. While the Virgin holds the infant on her lap the elder of the three kings has fallen on his knees before them. Bareheaded he presents the infant with a golden casket. Christ takes one of the coins from the container and returns the king’s gaze. Both Balthazar and a third king stand behind him, each holding precious vessels. The latter has already placed his hat in front of his chest and bows to give the infant his present contained within a gold chalice. In the far distant background, a scene depicting the annunciation to the shepherds is visible on the horizon.
