The painting, which unifies elements from texts in the bible related to the scene of the agony in the garden, depicts Christ at the centre, kneeling in front of a large rock on a circular patch of grass in the garden of Gethsemane. He looks up to the left from where an angel descends towards him, bearing a chalice. Three apostles are asleep in the foreground of the composition, the young St John and the grey-haired figure of St Peter can be identified. In the background the soldiers who will subsequently arrest Christ can be seen approaching. They are accompanied by the figure of Judas dressed in yellow and who will ultimately betray Christ.
