The painting depicts a scene from the Passion with a large marble sarcophagus placed horizontally to occupy the foreground. Figure are arranged frieze-like around it. Unusually in this depiction of the entombment Christ is placed in the tomb by five bearded men. Two of these can be identified, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. They are typically represented together with St John, who is shown here behind at the left standing beside the Virgin morning with the three Marys. A third bearded man positioned at the centre in front of the sarcophagus on a strip of grass rendered in wonderful detail acts as a sort of go between. The burial scene is framed by a rocky arch that at the same time provides a view of a town in a distant landscape.
