The painting shows a half-length portrait of Philip, Landgrave of Hesse against a neutral blue background, facing to his left. He is wearing a fur cloak over a black tunic with decorative stitching and a white pleated shirt with a high collar. A black beret with a twisted wreath of pearls is positioned at an angle on his head. Two linked chains and a black band hang around his neck. His hands are folded in front of him and the index finger of his right hand prominently displays a ring.

Research History / Discussion

These paintings [the seven portraits from Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha] were without doubt originally conceived as a series. This theory is supported by various visual clues, including their similar dimensions and uniform backgrounds. In addition all the sitters are shown as half-length figures in three quarter profile with their hands positioned in front of their bodies. Six of the portraits are signed with the monogram IS. The series was probably created about 1560.
