The painting shows a half-length portrait of Wolfgang, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen against a neutral blue background, facing to his left. He is wearing a fur cloak over a black tunic with decorative stitching and a pleated white shirt with a high collar. A long linked chain is half concealed by his clothes and a choker with four rings threaded onto it hangs around his neck. His hands are clasped together and the right one displays a ring on the index finger.

Research History / Discussion

These paintings [the seven portraits from Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha] were without doubt originally conceived as a series. This theory is supported by various visual clues, including their similar dimensions and uniform backgrounds. In addition all the sitters are shown as half-length figures in three quarter profile with their hands positioned in front of their bodies. Six of the portraits are signed with the monogram IS. The series was probably created about 1560.
