  • purchased for Prince Albert at Christie's as the work of Matthäus Grünewald (Waagen 1854 78), June 1856 from the sale of pictures belonging to the Earl of Orford, who had purchased it in Bavaria, where it was found serving as divisions to a corn bin (Inventory Buckingham Palace: Pictures and Enamels: entry dated 24.11.1876)
  • recorded hanging on the chapel stairs in Buckingham Palace, 24.11.1876
  • recorded in the inventory completed for Buckingham Palace in June 1878 (no. 997)
  • the painting was on loan to the National Gallery from 1919 to 1968
