The painting depicts the Virgin sitting cross legged on the bare floor. Her red coat, worn over a dark, pleated robe, creates a padded base between her legs upon which the naked infant Christ stand while supported by his mother. Enveloped in a fur tunic the infant St John stands in front of the child and offers him grapes. A black curtain held by three angels separates the group from an apple tree and an expansive landscape in the background.
