Research History / Discussion

This small format portrait type depicting Erasmus as a half-length figure with overlapping hands was first produced by Hans Holbein the Younger and his workshop [a further example is now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, see inv. no. 1975.1.138]. Its popularity inspired further copies like thoses from the Cranach workshop: [NL_EF-MBBR_EF001]; [PRIVATE_NONE-P249]; [PRIVATE_NONE-P329]; [PRIVATE_NONE-P372]; [CH_KMBe_G0639]
