  • DESCRIPTION

    Tools/Materials:
    - pointed brush, in details also with a quill (?); fluid black pigmented medium; the broader lines were drawn with a brush, the thinner lines with a small pointed brush or in details with a quill (?)

    Type/Ductus:
    - detailed and freehand underdrawing
    - broad, sketchy lines are combined with some thinner lines

    Function:
    - only roughly binding for the final painted version; the broader lines are used to define form and delineate contours, roughly indicating folds in the drapery; there is little representation of volume; the thinner lines are mainly visible in the face of Joseph and in the angel in the foreground on the left

    Deviations:
    - numerous minor alterations in the painted version to clearly define form

    INTERPRETATION

    Attribution:
    - Lucas Cranach the Elder
