Interpretation / History / Discussion:
Friedländer, Rosenberg doubt the authenticity of the inscription, which was added without any sensitivity for the composition and may not be by Cranach. However, despite this the date is correct for the creation of the painting.
[Friedländer, Rosenberg 1979, 99, No. 143]
‘Doubts about the authenticity of the inscription and the identity of the sitter were recently resolved by a technical examination, which revealed that the inscription was added shortly after completion of the painting, but not during the painting process. It can be assumed that the person responsible for the inscription knew who was depicted as the age stated is correct.’
[Elke A. Werner, Exhib. Cat. Berlin 2009, 166-167, No. I.9]
‚In Cranach’s oeuvre this portrait and its pendant, depicting young boys in armor, are unique.’
[Elke A. Werner, Exhib. Cat. Berlin 2009, 166-167, No. I.9]
