This panel shows Christ on the cross flanked by the two thieves, beneath the cross the converted centurion rides a rearing horse. Here the figure of the centurion on the right is juxtaposed with a depiction of the women and St John grouped around the slumped figure of the Virgin

This panel shows Christ on the cross flanked by the two thieves, beneath the cross the converted centurion rides a rearing horse. Here the figure of the centurion on the right is juxtaposed with a depiction of the women and St John grouped around the slumped figure of the Virgin on the left. It has been identified as a copy after a version by Lucas Cranach the Younger in the Anhaltische Gemälde-Galerie, Dessau [DE_AGGD_17].

Research History / Discussion

This painting is a copy after [DE_AGGD_17] and is signed with the monogram 'CLR', a signature that has been associated with the painter Christian Richter (1587 in Altenburg - 30.05.1667 in Weimar) who completed numerous copies after Cranach.
