This panel shows Christ on the cross flanked by the two thieves, beneath the cross the converted centurion rides a rearing horse. Here the figure of the centurion on the right is juxtaposed with a depiction of the women and St John grouped around the slumped figure of the Virgin on the left. It has been identified as a copy after a version by Lucas Cranach the Younger in the Anhaltische Gemälde-Galerie, Dessau [DE_AGGD_17].

Research History / Discussion

This painting is a copy after [DE_AGGD_17] and is signed with the monogram 'CLR', a signature that has been associated with the painter Christian Richter (1587 in Altenburg - 30.05.1667 in Weimar) who completed numerous copies after Cranach.
