The crucifixion with the converted captain [...] Christ still lives and is flanked by the thieves, beneath the cross the captain rides a rearing horse. The paintings depicting this scene also have an inscription quoting the relevant verse from the bible (Luk. 23, 46 or Mk. 15, 39). Recent research has shown that his new iconographical type can be more closely associated with Lucas Cranach the Younger. It is a confessional painting inspired by reformation ideas and can be interpreted as meaning that salvation comes alone through a belief in the word of God [...] The panel in Dessau differs slightly from this type [...] by contrasting the captain on the right with a depiction of the women and St John grouped around the slumped figure of the Virgin.
