The sacrifice of Isaac is located on a rock in the upper third of the painting: Abraham gazes up to heaven brandishing a sword in his right hand while holding Isaac's head with his left hand. He in turn kneels at the edge of a stone wall, which serves as the foundations for a pyre, and his torso rests on the bundles of wood. A descending angel grabs the sword from Abraham and points to the ram caught by the horns in bushes with his right hand. The two servants with the donkey are positioned prominently in the foreground, one standing, the other sitting. A bush serves as a backdrop behind them and they have seemingly been elevated to leading figures within the scene. To their right is a landscape, which offers a view into the far distance where a town is visible in the background.
