Surface:

  • slightly dusty

Varnish:

  • glossy - probably a recent application, fine network of cracks

Paint layers:

  • adhesion to the ground/support is generally good

  • numerous filled and retouched losses in the sky and along the join

  • fine network of cracks

  • drying cracks in the red admixtures

  • damage caused by the frame rebate, particularly along the top edge

Support:

  • the joints are slightly open

  • slight convex warp

Frame:

  • the members have a coved profile and are 80 mm in width; guilded

  • the mitred joints are slightly open

  • drips along the left coved profile

  • abrasion of the guilding where in relief

  • the corners are knocked

  • water stains and drips at the top left corner on the reverse

Limewood laminated onto a wooden auxillary support (fir): 93.3 x 41.4 cm

The painted panel was thinned with a plane and attached to a new wooden panel. The paint layers are in a bad condition and there is considerable overpaint, particularly in the background. A triangular shaped piece has been added to the top right corner. A strip 4.5 cm in length has also been added to the left side.

The overpaint was to a large extent removed; disturbing losses, particularly along the edge of the joint were retouched. Regenerated and synthetic resin varnish applied.
