St Agnes is depicted as a full-length figure, facing left in front of a landscape and a hedge. She wears a red dress trimmed with ermine and holds a lamb in her hands. There is a guilded gold halo around her head.

Surface:

- slightly dusty

- two whitish-matt drips on the dress - one on the lower half and the other above

Varnish:

- glossy - presumably a recent application

- yellowish remnants in the recesses

- fine network of cracks

- damage caused by the rebate of the frame, particularly on the right

Paint layers:

- adhesion to the ground/support is generally good - except in the sky

- large fills and retouches

- numerous small losses over the entire painted surface

- drying cracks - particularly in the red dress

- some isolated larger cracks in the paint layer

- fine network of cracks over the entire surface

Support:

- concave warp

Frame:

- the members have a coved profile and measure 80 mm in width, guilded

- the corners and the sides are damaged

- areas in relief are abraded

- very patchy

Limewood laminated onto a wooden auxillary support (fir): 93.2 x 41.5 cm

The original panel was thinned with a plane and attached to a new wooden panel. The paint layers are in a bad condition and extensively overpainted. A triangular piece has been added to the top left corner.

Conservation History

The extensive, rough overpaint was for the most part removed. Disturbing losses were filled and retouched. Regeneration. Final varnish: synthetic resin.
