DESCRIPTION

Tools / Materials:

- fluid dark medium, brush (?); possibly in combination with dark chalk

Type/Ductus:

- freehand underdrawing ?

- occasional thin, long and unbroken lines

Function:

- binding for the final painted version; lines where visible delineate contours, define shapes and features; no representation of volume

Deviations:

- a few, minor alterations made during the painted version: Christ’s feet

  • thinned with a toothed plane

  • the top and left edges have been cropped

  • a cradle made from oak wood and sapele mahogany was glued to the reverse with PVA.

Varnish:

  • the painting has a glossy resin varnish, which was probably applied repeatedly with a brush. The strong fluorescence of this layer restricts the identification of retouches under UV light to a few relatively new ones.
