Support

- beech wood (Fagus sylvatica.)

- 3 planks, glued horizontally

- widths from the left: top 24.2, 9.2, 20.2 cm, bottom 24.5, 8.1, 21.1 cm

- 1.5 cm thick

- the knots were left in the wood

- joins were reinforceed on both sides with an application of tow

- the panel was trimmed slightly at the top and bottom

Reverse:

- the level of the panel differs along the joins, but was left untreated

- a white ground was applied and painted with a broad black band either side (left 10 cm, right 37 cm)

Ground and Imprimatura

- both the ground and paint was applied to the panel in a frame

- the edge of the ground and paint surface has been retained on all four sides

Underdrawing

- executed with a brush

- lines marking the contours and some drawing within the forms are visible

Paint Layers and Gilding

- Pentimenti: the right hand of the knight beside King David was originally further to the left

- very fine drying cracks are visible in all the painted areas where black was added

[Bartl, Cat. Nuremberg 1997, 142]

Condition Reports

Date1997

Support:

  • hairline cracks

  • old wood worm damage

  • the panel has been trimmed slightly at the top and bottom

Reverse:

  • there is a deep indentation on the right of the top plank

Painted surface:

  • the black edge was later repainted with a brown glaze

  • the paint layers are raised in the areas where the panel is covered with an application of tow, the edges of the paint flakes are abraded

  • there are losses in the paint and ground layers over the entire surface. These are more extensive along the splits and the rocky landscape in the foreground on the right and are probably related to the wood species
