Light microscopy; SEM / EDX

Cross-section examination:

Sample No.: PO3/1

Sample location: 48.9 cm from bottom/0.6 cm from the right

Brief description of paint: red(orange) from the robe

Description:

1. White ground: SEM/EDX: O, Ca (chalk (with coccoliths)

2. Black layer: SEM/EDX: O, Si, S, Pb, Ca, Hg, Al, K, [Fe], substantial amounts of C (carbon black, ochre, lead white)

3. Orange layer: SEM/EDX: O, S, Hg, Si, Al, Ca, Pb, K, P (Cl, Na); spot: O, Al, S, K, Pb, Ca, Mg, (Si, Cl) (vermilion, red lake glazes [Al-, S-, K, some P in small amounts], lead white (in small amounts), quartz (in very small amounts, from the vermilion?)

Comments: the ratio of Al:S:K in the red lake is about 1:1:0,5 (in At%); single particles of quartz were found and may be associated with the vermilion

4. Thin orange-brownish glaze (orange in UV): SEM/EDX: O, Al, S, Si, K, Ca, Na, P, Pb, [Mg, Hg] (red lake glaze (Al-, S-, K-, some P)

Comments: the substrate of the red lake exhibits the same composition as that of the orange layer beneath. No glass was found and only a single quartz particle.
