DESCRIPTION

Tools/Materials:

- dry medium, dark chalk

Type/Ductus:

- freehand underdrawing

- delicate, fine lines

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; the lines delineate contours and generally describe the essential details of the face; no representation of volume

Deviations:

- numerous alterations during the painting process to clearly define form: correction to the sitter’s proper right shoulder

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- Lucas Cranach the Younger ?

Support

- limewood (Tilia sp.)

- 3 boards

- widths from left: top: 15.0, 17.4, 17.3 cm, bottom: 18.0, 18.1, 13.0 cm

- 1.5 cm thick

- knots were left in the wood

- original size

Ground and Imprimatura

- before the panel was framed a ground was applied and it was painted.

- battens were employed at the top and the bottom to stabilize the panel

Underdrawing

- pen

- contours and lines within the forms

- single hairs fall over the sitter's face, over her temples

Paint Layers and Gilding

- Pentiment: the head was made narrower on the left side, the left side of the collar has been folded up

- the inscription was written without the aid of guide lines using a writing instrument, which can not clearly be identified as an ink brush

- drying cracks in the brown or black admixtures

[Bartl, Cat. Nuremberg 1997, 173]

Condition Reports

Date1997

Support:

  • the joins have been restored

  • there is a split in the centre of the panel

  • the right plank is slightly convexed

  • old wood worm damage

Reverse:

  • formerly horizontal battens were attached to the top, the centre and the bottom of the panel to reduce the warping. During this treatment 0.6cm was removed from the panel

  • central split and joins covered with an application of tow

  • the rebate at the side is later, the edges here were later covered with blue paper

Painted surface:

  • the brown and black admixtures are abraded

  • the lettering is abraded
