Research History / Discussion

'Walter Hugelshofer (?) told me that he had seen the panel in earlier years before it was cropped: the legs of the saint and the dragon on the lead were intact then.'

Condition Reports

Date2018

Support:

  • the original support has not survived, the ground and paint layers were transferred at a later date to a 0.7 cm thick fibreboard with an oak veneer and a pine wood cradle on the reverse (Examination results, Doerner-Institute, Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlung, 20.3.2003)

  • the panel has been cropped at the top and bottom (loss of some of the composition).

Varnish:

  • the painting has a glossy resin varnish, which was probably applied repeatedly with a brush. The strong fluorescence of this layer only restricted the identification of retouches under UV light to a few relatively new ones, for the most part along the joins.

[Cat. Coburg 2018, 58]

Date2003

'The motif of the dragon, which is significant element in the representation was lost when the painting was cropped to almost half its original height.'

[Weschenfelder, Exhib. Cat. Coburg 2003, 54]

"The original support has not been preserved. The ground and paint layers were transferred to a fibre board veneered with oak and cradled.'

[Weschenfelder, Exhib. Cat. Coburg 2003, 71]
