The round format accommodates the three-quarter-length figure of a young woman. She wears a richly bejewelled contemporary costume in green and ochre also comprising a wide-rimmed beret of dark red velvet, which she wears at a tilt. Her curly reddish-blonde hair cascades down over her shoulders. The contrary directions of movement in the figural composition lend the sitter spatial presence and make her stand out strikingly against the neutral darkness of the background.
Although her broad face with its wide-set eyes conveys a look of individuality, this female figure is presumably not a portrait but an ideal portrait of a lady, possibly a kind of courtesan. Small roundels such as this, which were based on classical coins and Renaissance medals, were probably intended as gifts. The large number of surviving examples attests to their enormous popularity.
