This fragment of an originally considerable taller panel depicts both saints as bust-length figures reading a book together. The remaining section of the image does not offer enough information to identify them by name, but an historical description of the original appearance [Lehfeldt 1900, col. 163-164] states that the saint on the left in a yellow robe and blue head attire is Simon. Generally this saint is accompanied by the apostle Jude Thaddeus and therefore it may be assumed that he is the figure on the right wearing a blue robe under a red coat.

Support

- fir

- four planks, vertically aligned and butt-joined. Planks I and II: 23.8 cm; plank III: 14.4 cm; plank IV: 10.4 cm

- the panel was thinned with a tooth plane to a thickness of 0.10 cm so it could be slotted into the original frame. It was bevelled at the sides

Ground and Imprimatura

- chalk ground

[Cat. Coburg 2018, 46]

Condition Reports

Date2018

Support:

  • the original panel is trimmed on all four sides

  • an additional batten of c. 0.7-0.9 cm was attached to each of the sides

  • a maple wood crade was attached to the reverse

  • the cradle and the original surface of the reverse were stained brown

Varnish:

  • the painting has a glossy resin varnish, which was probably applied repeatedly with a brush. The strong fluorescence of this layer restricts the identification of retouches under UV light to a few relatively new ones.
