This fragment of an originally considerably taller panel depicts a bust-length image of the two saints. James the Greater on the left is as clearly recognizable by the scallop shell on his hat as Andrew, who is represented leaning against the beam of an X-shaped cross and reading a book.

Technical studies

2018Technical Examination

Support

- fir

- four planks vertically aligned and butt-joined. Plank I: 8 cm; plank II: 15. 4 cm; plank III: 9.6 cm, plank IV: 12.5 cm

- the edges were thinned with a toothed plane at the front to a thickness of 0.1 cm so that the panel could be slotted into the original frame

Ground and Imprimatura

- chalk ground

[Cat. Coburg 2018, 46]

  • Dendrochronology / identification of wood species

Support

Identification of wood species: fir

[Klein report, 03.03.2016]

  • analysed by Peter Klein

Condition Reports

Date2018

Support:

  • the original panel is trimmed on all four sides

  • an additional batten of c. 0.7-0.9 cm was attached to each of the sides

  • a maple wood crade was attached to the reverse

  • the cradle and the original surface of the reverse were stained brown

Varnish:

  • the painting has a glossy resin varnish, which was probably applied repeatedly with a brush. The strong fluorescence of this layer restricts the identification of retouches under UV light to a few relatively new ones.
