Technique:

- The underdrawing was executed with a brush, employing broad strokes for the outlines and thinner lines within the forms; hooks, squiggles and crescent-shaped arcs were employed to indicate the muscles and the features within the heads; the painted version deviates from the drawing in the Virgin's lectern, the perspectival lines indicating the depth of the room and particularly on the left leg and the feet of Christ; the window and the flag in the background exhibit a more expansive underdrawing. - further underdrawing: there was originally an additional church spire in the landscape at the top right, the position of the Virgin's eyes has been changed?
