The Virgin wears a blue cloak over a red robe, the Christ child lies in her lap and she holds him with both hands. The child turns and looks to the left at St Catherine, who appears to kneel beside the Virgin. Christ puts a ring on the finger of Catherine's left hand as a sign of the mystical marriage, in her right hand she holds a sword, her attribute. With his other hand the child grabs the thumb of St Barbara, who kneels to the right of the Virgin. She in turn holds the child's foot. The heads of the the slightly raised Virgin and the two saints create a triangle, which lend the composition repose. Putti float in both upper corners.

Research History / Discussion

„… small mediocre workshop replica“

[Friedländer, Rosenberg 1978, 76, No. 36]

The impressive freehand underdrawing, which is stylistically very similar to drawings by Lucas Cranach the Elder , suggests that this is not a workshop copy but rather another version of the subject. However the execution in paint seems to have been delegated to an assistant in the workshop.

Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Materials:

- fluid, black medium and brushes of varying width; possibly in combination with a quill for details

Type/Ductus:

- detailed and freehand underdrawing

- thin to broader lines

- occasional hatching-stokes

- grey washes

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; lines delineate contours and describe the essential details and the facial features; some representation of volume (washes and hatching-strokes)

Deviations:

- alterations made during the painting process to clearly define form

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- Lucas Cranach the Elder and workshop

Comments:

- it is conceivable that Cranach carried out some minor corrections with a quill in both the faces and the hands

Support

- boards vertically aligned, a number of boards

- the original surface on the reverse has been retained

- the central join is covered with canvas on the reverse of the panel

- the edges of the panel exhibit a broad bevel on the reverse

- vertical marks from a block plane

Underdrawing

- masterly freehand underdrawing in a fluid black pigmented medium, stylistically similar to drawings by Lucas Cranach the Elder, minor deviation visible in the painted version.
