[...] According to Pesina the altarpiece was originally a triptych; with an 'Assumption of the Virgin crowned by Two Angels' on the central panel (the large fragment preserved in Prague is the lower part of this image), and the wing panels each depicted a pair of female saints (the fragment in Karlsruhe on the left, and the one in Aschaffenburg and the smaller fragment in Prague on the right). The exterior of the wing panels depicted the 'Annunciation of the Virgin'. According to Altgraf Salm and G. Goldberg (Cat. Aschaffenburg 1964) the subject of the altarpiece is more likely to be the Glorification of the Virgin and the intercession of the saints; evidently the invocations on the tablets each begin with a word, which evokes the depicted saint's name. Research History / Discussion

The mariological scene on the reverse of the panel can be dated to about 1600 according to the results of a technical examination of the painting. Remains of organic ornamentation and marbling were found beneath this paint layer (see: Sronek, Hornickova 2010, 3).

Paint Layers and Gilding
